Sanjay Dutt makes a gangster's threat convincing, but we value him most when warmth and comic timing complicate it. His villains can be imposing; casting him only for menace leaves too much of the actor unused.

Adheera's tattoos in K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022) announce that Sanjay Dutt is here to be feared. His physical presence reinforces the warning, drawing on a long run of gangsters and flawed anti-heroes. We find him convincing at that work, though there is a limit to the pleasure of watching an actor look dangerous. He can also be warm and funny. Those qualities deserve as much attention from directors as the imposing appearance that makes him an obvious choice for Adheera.
His threatening screen image took hold with Ballu in Khalnayak (1993), after Naam (1986) had supplied an early breakthrough. In Vaastav: The Reality (1999), he made a rising gangster credible. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) then gave his comic timing more room and revived his popularity. The affectionate gangster role allows him warmth without discarding the tough image. We prefer that willingness to make his toughness funny to another demonstration of how formidable he can look.
The bald Kancha Cheena in Agneepath (2012) helps explain why the villain parts keep coming. Supporting roles and antagonists became more prominent in his work from the mid-2010s. The danger of this phase is underuse: some later Hindi-film parts have been too brief to make much of him. Distinctive looks can establish a threat quickly, but a script still needs to give the actor something to play.
Prashanth Neel's K.G.F: Chapter 2 offers a qualified pleasure, with Yash's composed Rocky giving the spectacle its centre. We enjoyed the brutal fights, but the abrupt editing and relentless sound wore us down. Dutt's physical menace fits this approach, though the film gives us reasons to tire of so much aggression. It is worth considering if action is the attraction and noise is no deterrent. For a first encounter with Dutt, we would choose Munna Bhai M.B.B.S..

Sanjay Dutt is an Indian actor and producer who works primarily in Hindi cinema. He is the son of actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt. He made his screen debut in the 1981 film Rocky.
Dutt is known for roles in films including Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003) and its sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) as Murli Prasad Sharma, PK (2014) as Bhairao Singh, K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022) as Adheera, and Dhurandhar (2025) as SP Chaudhary Aslam. He has also appeared in Om Shanti Om (2007), Ra.One (2011), Agneepath (2012) and Jawan (2023).
