In High Fidelity (2020), the people spending time together in the record shop are often more interesting than Rob's uncertainty about her own life. Creators Sarah Kucserka and Veronica West give us good company, but the central story develops too little across ten episodes. The supporting cast is lively enough to make us wish the friendships received more attention.
Kucserka's breakthrough writing work on Ugly Betty (2006) preceded a stretch across network drama, including Chicago Fire (2012). The significant turn was High Fidelity, which she co-created and co-showran with West, adapting Nick Hornby's novel with a woman at its centre. That choice suits her interest in commitment and the difficulty of growing up. It also puts considerable pressure on how much a series can find in one person's indecision.
Zoë Kravitz gives the adaptation its strongest support as Rob. We felt for her because Kravitz lets the hurt show without disguising how carefully Rob presents herself. Kucserka and West are right to let those qualities coexist, rather than asking us to stop noticing the less appealing parts of someone we like. The difficulty is that the writing returns to this tension more often than it develops it, and an appealing performance cannot quite supply the changes the story needs.
Her later co-showrunning work with Jenny Han on The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022), adapted from Han's young-adult trilogy, keeps relationships at the centre. These are collaborative programmes, and assigning every successful exchange or stalled storyline to one writer would be misleading. Kucserka's work with West nevertheless gives us a reason to seek out her writing: the record-shop ensemble is persuasive enough to sustain our interest when Rob's story cannot. Start with High Fidelity for that company, provided a hesitant romance is your kind of evening.
Biography
Sarah Kucserka is an American television writer and producer. She graduated from Syracuse University and began her career working on projects associated with screenwriter Kevin Williamson, including the films Venom (2005) and Cursed (2005).
She has written for series including Ugly Betty (2006–2008), Brothers & Sisters (2006–2011), Chicago Fire (2012–2017), Bull (2016–2018) and Hart of Dixie (2011–2015). In 2007 she shared a Writers Guild of America award for her work on Ugly Betty. Kucserka frequently collaborates with writer and producer Veronica West.
She co-created the Hulu series High Fidelity (2020) with West, serving as writer and showrunner. She later worked as showrunner on The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022–2025).
