Biography
Seeta Devi, born Renee Smith on 15 October 1912 in the Bengal Presidency of British India, was an Anglo-Indian actress prominent in the Indian silent film era. She was discovered by filmmaker Himanshu Rai and became a leading star in several Indo-German co-productions directed by Franz Osten.
Her notable roles include Gopa in The Light of Asia (1925), a part in Shiraz (1928), and Sunita in A Throw of Dice (1929). She also appeared in films for Madan Theatres in Calcutta, such as Durgesh Nandini (1927) and Kapalkundala (1929), and directed Bharat Ramani (1930). Devi was credited under names including Renee Smith, Seeta Debi and Sita Devi.
She had limited work in sound films and later focused on theatre. Devi died in 1983.
