Shahana Goswami makes vulnerability visible without turning it into a plea for sympathy. We value her restraint in Santosh, where she gives an absorbing police drama human weight despite gaps in the writing.
Fi1m perspective
In Santosh (2024), Shahana Goswami gives little away, yet we are seldom shut out. Her Constable Santosh Saini, a widow entering the police force, is vulnerable without continually asking for our sympathy. We felt for her because Goswami lets us see how exposed she is within an institution that rewards prejudice. Her restraint is a good reason to watch Sandhya Suri’s absorbing police drama, even when its writing becomes too eager to explain what the actors have already made clear.
That interest in women negotiating difficult circumstances runs through work that has moved between supporting parts and independent leads. Her earlier parts included Firaaq (2009) with director Nandita Das and Midnight’s Children (2012) with Deepa Mehta. Television brought prominent parts in A Suitable Boy (2020) and Bombay Begums (2021), followed by the lead roles in Zwigato (2023) and Santosh. The move into independent leads makes particular sense for an actor whose characters can remain interesting without announcing everything they feel.
Das returned to her for Zwigato, casting her as Pratima in a household under gig-economy pressure, where her warmth and naturalism suit the everyday demands of the part. Suri gives that attention to ordinary vulnerability a harsher setting in Santosh. Alongside Sunita Rajwar, Goswami helps keep a story about prejudice and institutional power attached to the women working within it. Their performances make the screenplay’s urge to explain itself feel unnecessary. That is where Suri gets the strongest results from her cast.
The limitation in Santosh is how little room the film leaves for the officer’s grief. Goswami holds our attention, but she cannot supply all the missing connections between private loss and conduct at work. We are asked to do too much of that work ourselves, and the performance does not remove the gap. Her ability to remain interesting in an underwritten passage should not become an excuse to give her another one. Start with Santosh, but be prepared to supply some of the private life that its screenplay leaves out.
