Biography
Shuntarō Tanikawa (also credited as Shuntaro Tanikawa) was a Japanese poet, translator and screenwriter. He was born in Tokyo on 15 December 1931 and died there on 13 November 2024.
Tanikawa co-wrote the screenplay for Kon Ichikawa’s documentary Tokyo Olympiad (1965) alongside Natto Wada, Yoshio Shirasaka and Ichikawa. He contributed screenplays to other films including The Wanderers (1973) and Hi no tori (1978), and wrote the lyrics for the theme song of Howl’s Moving Castle (2004). He is best known for more than sixty collections of poetry, beginning with Two Billion Light Years of Solitude (1952), and for his translations of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts and Mother Goose rhymes into Japanese.
