Biography
Sidney Bernstein was a British media executive and film producer. Born in Ilford in 1899, he built a career in cinema exhibition before expanding into production and television. He co-founded the London Film Society in 1925 and later established the Granada Group, serving as its chairman.
In the mid-1940s Bernstein formed Transatlantic Pictures with Alfred Hitchcock. He served as uncredited producer on Hitchcock's Rope (1948) and Under Capricorn (1949). He was also involved in the production of documentary material on German concentration camps during and after the Second World War.
Bernstein founded Granada Television in 1954 and remained a key figure in British commercial television. He was created a life peer as Baron Bernstein of Leigh in 1969 and died in London in 1993.
