Biography
Simon Wincer is an Australian film and television director. Born in Sydney in 1943, he attended Cranbrook School from 1950 to 1961. After leaving school he worked as a stagehand at HSV Channel 7, later becoming a floor manager and occasional director.
He began directing Australian television series in the 1970s and made his feature debut with Snapshot (1979). His early films include Harlequin (1980) and Phar Lap (1983). In the United States he directed the miniseries Lonesome Dove (1989), for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, and the family film Free Willy (1993). Other credits include Quigley Down Under (1990), Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991), The Phantom (1996) and The Cup (2011).
