Biography
Sooni Taraporevala is an Indian screenwriter, photographer and filmmaker. Born in Mumbai in 1957 to a Parsi family, she studied English and American literature at Harvard University and cinema studies at New York University.
She wrote the screenplay for Salaam Bombay! (1988), directed by Mira Nair, on which she also worked as a still photographer. She later wrote the screenplays for Nair’s Mississippi Masala (1991) and The Namesake (2007). Taraporevala has also written Such a Long Journey (1998) and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (2000). Her directorial credits include Little Zizou (2008) and the Netflix film Yeh Ballet (2020).
She is the author of the photography book Parsis: A Photographic Journey. Taraporevala received the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2014.
