Biography

Soraya Gilanni Viljoen is a British production designer of Pakistani and South African descent. Born and raised in London, with time spent in Portugal, she studied English Literature at the University of Oxford before moving into film in 2012.

She has designed several features, including Adura Onashile’s Girl (2023), which premiered at Sundance; Georgia Oakley’s Blue Jean (2022), which won the Audience Award at the Venice Film Festival and received a BAFTA nomination; Amrou al-Kadhi’s Layla, also a Sundance premiere; and Lance Hammer’s Queen at Sea, which competed at the Berlinale.

Earlier in her career, Viljoen served as art director of the independent publishing house Tilted Axis Press from its founding in 2015 until 2021.
