In Clueless (1995), Stacey Dash's Dionne looks comfortable in the social world that Cher takes so seriously. Dash gives her a composure distinct from Alicia Silverstone's earnest conviction and Brittany Murphy's eagerness as Tai. That difference matters in a comedy whose teenagers share so much slang and so much concern about clothes and status. We warmed to Dionne because Dash makes that shared world feel inhabited by another person with her own manner.
Dash had already played a leading role opposite Damon Wayans in Mo' Money (1992) before her breakthrough in Clueless. A supporting part in Renaissance Man (1994) came between those two comedies. She then returned as Dionne for the Clueless television spin-off, which ran from 1996 to 1999. That continuity makes Dionne the clearest place to begin with Dash's work, though it should not make the earlier leading role disappear from consideration.
The mistake would be to credit the clothes for all of it. Fashionable supporting characters can easily become decoration; Dash supplies a manner we can distinguish from those around her. Amy Heckerling's screenplay helps by giving the teenagers a shared language without making everyone sound alike. Dash's comic timing works within those exchanges, allowing Silverstone to remain the centre of attention without making Dionne seem dispensable. The story still thins out and loses momentum, but the ensemble gives us a reason to stay.
View from the Top (2003) brought another supporting comedy role, alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, while television work included The Game and Single Ladies. Dash has frequently been cast as the glamorous friend, a useful place in a comedy but a restrictive basis for judging an actor. We would be cautious about reading that casting pattern as proof of what she cannot do. Start with Clueless, and pay attention to the company Cher keeps.

Dash is best known for playing Dionne Davenport in the 1995 film Clueless and the subsequent television series (1996–1999). Her other film roles include Moving (1988), Mo' Money (1992), Renaissance Man (1994) and View from the Top (2003). Television appearances include episodes of The Cosby Show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
