Biography
Stanley Price (12 August 1931 – 28 February 2019) was a British novelist, playwright and screenwriter. Born in Stamford Hill, Hackney, London, he completed National Service in the Army before reading history at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He began his career as a journalist, working as a reporter for Life magazine in New York from 1957 to 1960, before returning to London to contribute to newspapers and magazines.
Price wrote film screenplays including Arabesque (1966), Gold (1974) and Shout at the Devil (1976). He contributed to television series such as Minder (1980) and wrote adaptations of Noël Coward stories for Screen Two and other BBC productions. His original television screenplays include Genghis Cohn (1993), which won awards including an Ace Award for best screenplay.
Price also wrote for the theatre, with West End plays including Horizontal Hold (1967) and Moving (1981). Later non-fiction works include the memoir Somewhere to Hang My Hat (2002). He was married to Judy Fenton from 1957; their son is the historian Munro Price.
