Biography
Stephen Jeffreys (1950–2018) was a British playwright and screenwriter. He is best known for his play The Libertine (1994), about the Earl of Rochester, which he adapted into a screenplay for the 2005 film starring Johnny Depp. He also wrote the screenplay for the 2013 film Diana.
Jeffreys had a long association with the Royal Court Theatre in London, where he worked as a literary associate. His other plays include Valued Friends (1990), The Clink (1990) and A Going Concern (1993). He co-wrote the musical Backbeat and translated The Magic Flute for the English National Opera.
He died in London on 17 September 2018.
