Biography
Sumiko Fuji, born Junko Shundō on 1 December 1945 in Gobō, Wakayama, Japan, is a Japanese actress. She began her career in the 1960s under the name Junko Fuji, becoming known for leading roles in yakuza and ninkyo eiga films opposite actors such as Ken Takakura and Kōji Tsuruta. She starred in the Hibotan Bakuto series as the sword-wielding gambler Red Peony.
Fuji retired from acting in 1972 after marrying kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō VII. She resumed television appearances in 1974 and returned to films from 1989 under the name Sumiko Fuji. Later credits include roles in 13 Assassins (1963), Hula Girls (2006), Air Doll (2009) and the voice of Sakae Jinnouchi in Summer Wars (2009), as well as Children of the Sea (2019). She has won Blue Ribbon Awards for best supporting actress in 1999 and 2006. She is the mother of actress Shinobu Terajima and kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō VIII.
