Biography
Tamar-kali, also credited as Tamara Colletta Brown, is an American composer and singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn, New York. Born in Brooklyn with family roots in the Sea Islands of South Carolina, she received classical choral training as a child before performing in the Afropunk and punk scenes.
She made her feature-film composing debut with Mudbound (2017) for director Dee Rees, winning the World Soundtrack Award for Discovery of the Year. Subsequent scores include The Assistant (2020), Shirley (2020), The Last Thing He Wanted (2020) and Come Sunday (2018). She has frequently collaborated with female directors and incorporates classical, punk and Gullah Geechee musical elements in her work.
Tamar-kali has also composed for documentaries such as John Lewis: Good Trouble (2020) and created orchestral pieces including the Sea Island Symphony.
