Biography
Teinosuke Kinugasa (衣笠 貞之助) was a Japanese film director and screenwriter. He began his career as an actor specialising in female roles (onnagata) at the Nikkatsu studio before moving into directing in the early 1920s.
His best-known works include the avant-garde silent film A Page of Madness (1926) and the historical drama Gate of Hell (1953), the latter of which received the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1954 and the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. He contributed to the screenplay for the 1963 film An Actor's Revenge, an adaptation of his own earlier 1935 version.
Kinugasa was born on 1 January 1896 in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture, and died on 26 February 1982 in Kyoto.
