Biography
Tencho Gyalpo is a Tibetan actress and politician. She played the mother of the Dalai Lama in Martin Scorsese's Kundun (1997). She is the niece of the Dalai Lama.
Born in 1966 in Dharamsala, India, Gyalpo was educated at the Tibetan Children's Village school and later obtained degrees in psychology and economics. She was elected to the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile in 1991, representing the province of Amdo, and served two terms. She has also worked in business, running restaurants in Dharamsala.
Gyalpo later moved to the United States, where she has held advocacy roles including as president of the International Campaign for Tibet.
