Biography
Terje Rypdal is a Norwegian guitarist and composer. Born in Oslo on 23 August 1947, he studied music at the University of Oslo and the Oslo Conservatory, where he took composition lessons with Finn Mortensen and improvisation with George Russell.
He began as a rock guitarist with the band The Vanguards in the 1960s before turning to jazz, performing with Jan Garbarek and others. Rypdal has composed symphonies, concertos and chamber works, many released on ECM Records. His film scores include the music for Zero Kelvin (1995) and contributions to Equinox (1992) and the soundtrack of Heat (1995).
