Biography
Thanasis Valtinos (also credited as Thanassis Valtinos) was a Greek writer and screenwriter. He was born on 16 December 1932 in Karatoulas, Arcadia, and died on 30 October 2024 in Athens. He wrote screenplays for several films directed by Theo Angelopoulos, including Voyage to Cythera (1984), for which he shared the Cannes Film Festival screenplay prize, Landscape in the Mist (1988), and The Suspended Step of the Stork (1991).
Valtinos was also a prominent prose writer whose novels and short stories often explored Greek history and the experiences of ordinary people. He collaborated with the Art Theater of Karolos Koun and translated ancient Greek tragedies. He served as general manager of ERT (1989–1990) and president of the Hellenic Film Center (2005–2006), and was elected president of the Academy of Athens. He received the Great State Prize for Literature in 2012.
