Biography
Thích Quảng Đức (born Lâm Văn Tức, c. 1897 – 11 June 1963) was a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk. He served as abbot of Phước Hòa Pagoda and chairman of the Panel on Ceremonial Rites of the Congregation of Vietnamese Monks.
On 11 June 1963, in Saigon, he carried out a public self-immolation in protest against the persecution of Buddhists by the government of Ngô Đình Diệm. Photographs and footage of the event, taken by Malcolm Browne, received worldwide attention.
Archive footage of the self-immolation appears in the film Persona (1966), credited as Self – burning monk, and in Nixon (1995).
