Biography
Tod Browning (born Charles Albert Browning Jr.) was an American film director, screenwriter and actor. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on 12 July 1880, he died in Malibu, California, on 6 October 1962. He began his career in circuses and vaudeville before entering films as an actor under D. W. Griffith.
Browning contributed to the screenplay and served as second assistant director on Griffith's Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages (1916). He directed numerous silent films in the 1920s, many in collaboration with Lon Chaney, and later worked in sound cinema. His best-known films include Dracula (1931) and Freaks (1932).
