Biography
Toni-Leslie James is an American costume designer working in theatre, film and television. She designed the costumes for the film Rustin (2023) and the stage musical Come from Away (2021).
She holds a BFA in theatre from The Ohio State University. James has designed numerous Broadway productions, including Jelly's Last Jam (1992), Bernhardt/Hamlet (2018) and Jitney (2017). She received the Irene Sharaff Young Masters Award and the 2009 Obie Award for Sustained Excellence in Costume Design, as well as a Drama Desk Award for Bernhardt/Hamlet and three Tony Award nominations.
James has also worked in television on series such as Whoopi and As the World Turns, and has taught costume design at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Yale School of Drama, where she is resident costume designer for Yale Repertory Theatre.
