Biography
Toshirō Mayuzumi was a Japanese composer. He studied composition at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, graduating in 1951, and spent a year at the Paris Conservatoire.
He composed more than a hundred film scores between 1951 and 1984, including the music for Tokyo Olympiad (1965). His other notable scores include Street of Shame (1956), When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (1960), The End of Summer (1961), The Insect Woman (1963), The Pornographers (1966), The Bible: In the Beginning... (1966) — for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score — Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967) and Profound Desires of the Gods (1968). He also wrote symphonies, ballets and operas, and was a pioneer of musique concrète and electronic music in Japan. Mayuzumi received the Otaka Prize twice and the Purple Medal of Merit.
