Travis Fimmel holds our attention in the pauses. In Vikings (2013), his Ragnar Lothbrok has appetite and ambition, but also seems capable of stopping to consider what he wants. We were drawn to him because that thoughtfulness made the raider harder to predict. It is a good reason to follow a series whose dialogue can be painfully blunt.
Michael Hirst's writing can make Ragnar easier to excuse than the people around him, and this is where the performance and the script pull apart. Fimmel leaves us uncertain about a man whom the drama sometimes seems determined to have us approve of. He can hold attention without much dialogue or overt action, so those attempts to explain his appeal are not needed. The battles have more consequence because there is a person to follow between them.
His early television work included Tarzan (2003) and The Beast (2009), before Vikings made him a leading television presence. Film roles followed, though television remained a substantial part of the work. Warcraft (2016) gave him the military commander Anduin Lothar, while Lean on Pete (2018) gave him Ray, a supporting role in an independent drama. That smaller part is worth remembering when the large speculative productions threaten to become the whole description of his work.
The Ridley Scott-produced Raised by Wolves (2020) and his role as Desmond Hart in Dune: Prophecy (2024) continue that interest in heightened settings. Those are sensible surroundings for an actor whose quiet delivery and expressive eyes can make larger-than-life figures seem recognisably human. We value the suggestion that a character has something to consider beyond the information the scene needs him to deliver.
We would like his next roles to leave him more room to suggest faults without the script explaining them away. His ability to hold our attention quietly should give writers permission to leave a little more unsaid. Start with Vikings if historical drama is your sort of evening, and allow for dialogue less subtle than its leading man.

Travis Fimmel is an Australian actor. Born on 15 July 1979 in Echuca, Victoria, he was raised on a dairy farm and briefly pursued Australian rules football and architecture studies before turning to modelling and acting.
Fimmel gained international recognition for his leading role as Ragnar Lothbrok in the History Channel series Vikings (2013–2017). He has also appeared in the films Warcraft (2016) as Anduin Lothar and Raised by Wolves (2020–2022) as Marcus, and more recently played Desmond Hart in the series Dune: Prophecy (2024).
