Biography
Victor Sjöström was a Swedish film director, screenwriter and actor. He began his career as a stage actor before making his first film in 1912. He directed and often appeared in numerous Swedish silent films, several adapted from novels by Selma Lagerlöf.
His best-known Swedish work includes The Phantom Carriage (1921), in which he also wrote the screenplay and played the lead role of David Holm. He later worked in Hollywood under the name Victor Seastrom, directing films such as He Who Gets Slapped (1924) and The Wind (1928).
In later life Sjöström acted in Ingmar Bergman’s Wild Strawberries (1957). He died in Stockholm in 1960.
