Biography
Vittorio Bonicelli (28 April 1919 – 26 July 1994) was an Italian screenwriter and film critic. Born in San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore, he spent his childhood in Cesena, qualified in law and then worked as a theatre and film critic in Milan, first for Avanti! and from 1950 for the weekly Tempo until 1960.
He moved to Rome to work as a screenwriter on several large-scale productions for Dino De Laurentiis. His credits include Barbarella (1968), Waterloo (1970) and the screenplay, written with Ugo Pirro, for Vittorio De Sica’s The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970), which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. He also contributed to television projects with directors including Franco Rossi and Roberto Rossellini, and served on the jury of the 1957 Venice Film Festival.
