Biography
Walter Sedlmayr (6 January 1926 – 14 July 1990) was a German stage, television and film actor from Munich. After wartime service and a Notabitur in 1945, he began his career with minor roles at the Münchner Kammerspiele and in Heimatfilme of the 1940s and 1950s.
He gained wider recognition through his association with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, appearing in Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) as Mr. Angermayer, Fox and His Friends (1975) and other films. His breakthrough came with the leading role in Hans-Jürgen Syberberg’s Theodor Hierneis oder Wie man ehemaliger Hofkoch wird (1972). Sedlmayr became a popular Volksschauspieler in long-running television series including Polizeiinspektion 1 (1977–1988).
Sedlmayr was murdered in his Munich apartment in July 1990; the case received extensive media coverage. Two former business associates were convicted of the crime in 1993.
