Biography

Wang Yu, also credited as Yu Wang or 王昱, is a Chinese cinematographer and director. He graduated from the Beijing Film Academy and began working in the industry in the early 1990s, initially as an assistant on Lou Ye's Weekend Lover (1993). His first credit as director of photography was on Lou Ye's Suzhou River (2000).

He has collaborated frequently with directors including Lou Ye, Jia Zhangke, Tian Zhuangzhuang and Ann Hui. Notable credits as cinematographer include The Go Master (2006), Lost in Beijing (2007), 24 City (2008) and The Golden Era (2014). He served as director of photography on Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms (2023) and its sequel Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force (2025).

Wang Yu has received several awards for his cinematography, including the Golden Goblet at the Shanghai International Film Festival for The Go Master and the Hong Kong Film Award for The Golden Era. He also directed the 2019 feature The Guilty Ones.
