Biography
Will Quadflieg (1914–2003) was a German stage and screen actor. Born Friedrich Wilhelm Quadflieg in Oberhausen, he began acting training while still at school and made his professional debut at the Stadttheater Oberhausen. He worked at theatres in Gießen, Gera, Düsseldorf and Berlin, including the Volksbühne and, from 1940 to 1944, the Schillertheater under Heinrich George.
After the war he helped found the Junges Theater (now Ernst-Deutsch-Theater) in Hamburg. From 1952 to 1959 he played Jedermann at the Salzburg Festival and from 1956 to 1962 collaborated with Gustaf Gründgens at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, notably as Faust opposite Gründgens’ Mephisto. He was the father of actor Christian Quadflieg.
Quadflieg appeared in films including Lola Montès (1955) as Franz Liszt and the 1960 film version of Faust. He also worked extensively in television, with roles in series such as Derrick and the mini-series Der große Bellheim (1992). He remained active on stage into the 1990s and died in Osterholz-Scharmbeck.
