Biography
William Castle was an American film director, producer, screenwriter and actor. He began his career in the theatre before moving into film in the 1930s and 1940s, directing a range of B-movies for studios including Columbia Pictures.
He became known in the late 1950s and 1960s for a series of low-budget horror and thriller films that he promoted with distinctive theatrical gimmicks. These included House on Haunted Hill (1959), The Tingler (1959), 13 Ghosts (1960), Homicidal (1961) and Strait-Jacket (1964). He also produced Rosemary's Baby (1968), directed by Roman Polanski.
Castle was born William Schloss Jr. in New York City and later adopted his professional name. He died in Los Angeles in 1977.
