Biography

William D. Wittliff, also known as Bill Wittliff, was an American screenwriter, producer, author and photographer. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1963 with a degree in journalism and, with his wife Sally, founded the Encino Press in Austin in 1964, specialising in books on Texas and the Southwest. In 1986 the couple established the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University, an archive of Southwestern literature, photography, music and film.

Wittliff wrote the teleplay and served as co-executive producer for the 1989 CBS miniseries Lonesome Dove, adapted from Larry McMurtry’s novel. He co-wrote the screenplay and produced the 1994 film Legends of the Fall, and wrote the screenplay for the 2000 film The Perfect Storm. His other screenwriting credits include Raggedy Man (1981), Barbarosa (1982) and The Black Stallion (1979). He received a Writers Guild of America Award and multiple Western Heritage Awards for his work.
