Biography

William Dudley (4 March 1947 – 31 May 2025) was a British theatre and production designer. He studied at Saint Martin's School of Art and the Slade School of Art, and began designing productions in 1970. He worked extensively for the National Theatre, Royal Court Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as on opera productions at the Royal Opera House, Bayreuth Festival and other venues.

Dudley received multiple Olivier Awards for his stage designs. His film credit includes production design on the 1995 BBC adaptation of Persuasion (directed by Roger Michell), for which he shared a BAFTA Television Award for Best Design with Brian Sykes; he also received a Royal Television Society award for the same production. He was appointed OBE in 2021 for services to stage design. He was married to theatre director Lucy Bailey.
