Biography
William Edwin Self (21 June 1921 – 15 November 2010) was an American actor and later television and film producer. Born in Dayton, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Chicago in 1943 with a degree in political science and began acting in films in 1945.
Between 1945 and 1952 he appeared in more than thirty films, often in uncredited or small roles. Notable credits include Pvt. Gawky Henderson in Story of G.I. Joe (1945), Sutter in Red River (1948), Cpl. Barnes in The Thing from Another World (1951), and Boatman in The Big Sky (1952). He also appeared in Sands of Iwo Jima (1950) and Pat and Mike (1952).
In 1952 Self left acting to work in television production. He produced episodes of Schlitz Playhouse of Stars and later held executive positions at CBS and 20th Century Fox Television, overseeing series including Batman, Peyton Place and MASH. He also produced the feature films The Shootist (1976) and From Noon Till Three* (1976).
