Biography

William Tracy (1 December 1917 – 18 July 1967) was an American character actor. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career on the Broadway stage, appearing in the 1937 production of Brother Rat as Misto Bottome.

He made his film debut recreating the role in the 1938 screen adaptation and went on to appear in Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), The Shop Around the Corner (1940) as Pepi Katona, Tobacco Road (1941) and Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941). From 1941 he played Sgt. Dorian "Dodo" Doubleday opposite Joe Sawyer in a series of Hal Roach military comedies.

In the 1950s Tracy worked mainly in television, notably as Hotshot Charlie in the series Terry and the Pirates (1952–1953). He had previously played the title role in the 1940 film serial of the same name. His final screen appearance was in the 1959 film -30-.
