Biography
Willy Kurant was a Belgian cinematographer. Born in Liège in 1934, he began his career as a documentary and news cameraman in the 1950s, working on short films and television reports in Belgium and abroad before moving to France in 1962 to study cinematography.
Kurant shot his first features in 1966: Agnès Varda’s Les Créatures and Jean-Luc Godard’s Masculin Féminin. He went on to work with directors including Orson Welles on The Immortal Story (1968), Maurice Pialat on Under the Sun of Satan (1987), and others such as Jerzy Skolimowski, Chris Marker and Philippe Garrel. He also collaborated with musician Serge Gainsbourg and, under the name Willy Curtis, on some American productions. Kurant received a César nomination for Under the Sun of Satan and was a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and the French Society of Cinematographers. He died in Paris in 2021.
