Biography
Wojciech Jerzy Has was a Polish film director and screenwriter. He was born in Kraków on 1 April 1925 and died in Łódź on 3 October 2000.
During the German occupation of Poland, Has studied at the Kraków Business and Commerce College and clandestine classes at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts. After the war he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and completed a one-year film course in 1946. He began by producing educational and documentary films at the Warsaw Documentary Film Studio before moving to the National Film Studio in Łódź.
Has made his feature debut with The Noose (1958) and went on to direct The Saragossa Manuscript (1965), The Doll (1968) and The Hourglass Sanatorium (1973). In 1974 he was appointed professor in the directing department at the National Film School in Łódź.
