Biography

Wu Ershan (also credited as Wuershan or 乌尔善) is a Chinese film director of Mongol descent. Born on 10 June 1972 in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, he studied oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts before graduating from the directing department of the Beijing Film Academy in 1998.

He began his career as a commercial and advertising director while also producing video art and installations. His feature debut Soap Opera (2004) won the FIPRESCI Award at the Busan International Film Festival. Later films include The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman (2011), for which he received the Best New Director prize at the Golden Horse Film Festival, Painted Skin: The Resurrection (2012) and Mojin: The Lost Legend (2015).

Wu Ershan directed and co-wrote Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms (2023), the first part of a mythological epic trilogy based on the novel Investiture of the Gods.
