Biography
Yoshi Oida is a Japanese actor, stage director and writer, also credited as Yoshi Oïda. Born on 26 July 1933 in Kobe, he trained in traditional Japanese theatre forms including Noh and Kyogen, studied philosophy at Keio University, and collaborated early in his career with Yukio Mishima.
He has lived in France since the late 1960s, joining Peter Brook’s company and the Centre International de Recherche Théâtrale in Paris in 1970. Oida has appeared in numerous international films, including The Pillow Book (1995) as The Publisher, Wasabi (2001), Taxi 2 (2000), The Stone Council (2006) and Silence (2016). He has also directed theatre and opera productions and written books on acting.
In 2013 he was appointed Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.
