Biography
Yuri Gantman (Юрий Самсонович Гантман) was a Soviet cinematographer. He graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in 1955. From 1957 he worked as a cinematographer at the Odessa Film Studio, moving to Mosfilm in 1964.
Gantman served as one of the directors of photography on Akira Kurosawa’s Dersu Uzala (1975), alongside Asakazu Nakai and Fyodor Dobronravov. His other credits include Vremya, vperyod! (1965, with N. Ardashnikov), Russkoye pole (1972), Krakh (1969) and 34-y skoryy (1981). He was named Honoured Artist of the RSFSR in 1976 and became a Candidate of Art History in 1983.
