Biography
Yuri Markovich Nagibin was a Soviet and Russian short story writer, novelist and screenwriter. Born in Moscow on 3 April 1920, he studied at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography before the Second World War interrupted his training. He served in the Red Army and later as a war correspondent.
Nagibin wrote nearly thirty screenplays. He co-wrote the script for Akira Kurosawa’s Dersu Uzala (1975) with the director; the film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Other credits include Tchaikovsky (1969), The Red Tent (1969) and The Chairman (1964).
He published numerous short-story collections and was a member of the Union of Soviet Writers. Nagibin died in Moscow on 17 June 1994.
