Biography
Yvonne Bezerra de Mello is a Brazilian social activist, artist and educator. She has worked for decades with street children and adolescents in Rio de Janeiro who have experienced violence and trauma.
She founded the Projeto Uerê school, which provides specialised education and support using her Uerê-Mello methodology. Bezerra de Mello appears as herself in the documentaries Warrior of Light (2001) and Bus 174 (2002).
She was among the first on the scene after the 1993 Candelária massacre and knew Sandro do Nascimento, the perpetrator of the 2000 bus hijacking depicted in Bus 174.
