Biography
Zoë Akins was an American playwright and screenwriter. Born in Humansville, Missouri, she began her career writing for the stage in the 1910s and achieved Broadway success with plays including The Greeks Had a Word for It (1930) and her adaptation The Old Maid (1935).
In 1935 Akins won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for The Old Maid. She also wrote screenplays in Hollywood, including Morning Glory (1933) and, with Frances Marion and James Hilton, Camille (1936). Several of her plays were adapted for film, among them The Old Maid (1939) and How to Marry a Millionaire (1953).
Akins died in Los Angeles in 1958.
