Biography
Zülfü Livaneli, also credited as Ömer Zülfü Livaneli, is a Turkish composer, musician and film director. He was born Ömer Zülfü Livanelioğlu on 20 June 1946 in Ilgın, Konya, Türkiye.
Livaneli has composed scores for more than thirty films, including Yol (1982), The Herd (1978), Shirin’s Wedding (1976) and Bliss (2007). He has also written songs performed by artists including Joan Baez and Maria Farantouri, and collaborated with Mikis Theodorakis. Livaneli directed the films Iron Earth, Copper Sky (1987), Sis (1989) and Veda - Atatürk (2010).
He studied music in Sweden after leaving Türkiye in the early 1970s and returned in 1984. Livaneli has also written novels, including Bliss.
