Biography
Akira Terao (寺尾聰) is a Japanese actor and musician. Born on 18 May 1947 in Yokohama, Kanagawa, he is the son of actor and director Jūkichi Uno. He graduated from Bunka Gakuin and began his career as a musician in the mid-1960s before debuting as an actor in Kei Kumai’s The Sands of Kurobe (1968).
Terao is best known for his roles in Akira Kurosawa’s Ran (1985), in which he played Taro Takatora Ichimonji, and Dreams (1990). Other notable film appearances include Madadayo (1993), After the Rain (1999) and Casshern (2004). As a singer, he achieved major success with the 1981 hit “Ruby no Yubiwa”. He is the only male actor to have received both the Japan Record Award and the Japan Academy Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
