Biography
Alan Smart (born 10 October 1963) is a retired American animator and animation director. He is known for his work as supervising director on the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants (1999–2021), having contributed from the pilot episode, and for his roles as assistant director, layout artist and director on The Simpsons (1989), including the episode 'Flaming Moe's' (1991).
Smart has worked as an animation director or in other animation roles on series including Rugrats (1991–1998), Rocko's Modern Life (1993–1996), Hey Arnold! (1996), CatDog (1998), The Critic (1994) and Clone High (2002–2003). He contributed to animated films such as The Little Mermaid (1989), Oliver & Company (1988) and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004). He received multiple Emmy Award nominations for his work on SpongeBob SquarePants.
