Biography
Albert Maltz was an American screenwriter, playwright and novelist. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he trained at Columbia and Yale universities and began his career writing plays in the 1930s before turning to screenwriting in the 1940s.
His credits include This Gun for Hire (1942), Destination Tokyo (1943), Pride of the Marines (1945), The Naked City (1948), Broken Arrow (1950, initially uncredited) and The Robe (1953, initially uncredited). He was one of the Hollywood Ten imprisoned in 1950 for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee regarding Communist Party membership, after which he was blacklisted for many years and wrote under the pseudonym John B. Sherry or without credit.
Later screen credits include Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970) and The Beguiled (1971).
