Biography
Albert Schattmann was a German cinematographer. Born in Herrnstadt, he entered the film industry in 1909 and trained first as a volunteer at a film copying plant before qualifying as a cameraman at the Vitagraph production company.
He worked as chief cameraman from 1911, primarily on early comedies directed by Heinrich Bolten-Baeckers. His career was interrupted by military service in 1915–16, during which he served as a war photographer on the eastern and south-eastern fronts. In 1926 he co-founded an advertising film company. Later he assisted fellow cinematographer Karl Hasselmann.
In 1936 Schattmann was one of several dozen cameramen who worked on Leni Riefenstahl’s two-part documentary Olympia (1938). He died in Berlin in 1949.
