Biography
Aldo Tonti (2 March 1910 – 7 July 1988) was an Italian cinematographer. Born in Rome, he began his career as a photographer before entering the film industry as an assistant camera operator in 1934. He debuted as cinematographer in 1939 with Piccoli naufraghi directed by Flavio Calzavara; his first significant credit was Ossessione (1943) by Luchino Visconti.
Tonti worked on films by directors including Federico Fellini, King Vidor, Richard Fleischer, Roberto Rossellini, John Huston, Alberto Lattuada, Mario Monicelli and others. Notable credits include Nights of Cabiria (1957), Barabbas (1961), Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967) and The Valachi Papers (1972). In 1961 he received a Silver Ribbon for best cinematography on Nicholas Ray's The Savage Innocents. He retired in 1982.
