Biography
Alena Smith is an American screenwriter, producer and director. She is a graduate of Haverford College and holds an MFA in playwriting from the Yale School of Drama. She began her television career as a staff writer on the third season of HBO's The Newsroom (2014) and later wrote and produced episodes of Showtime's The Affair (2015–2017).
Smith created the Apple TV+ series Dickinson (2019–2021), serving as showrunner, writer and executive producer across all 30 episodes; she also directed the series finale. The anachronistic comedy-drama, starring Hailee Steinfeld as Emily Dickinson, ran for three seasons. She has also written plays, short films and the book Tween Hobo: Off The Rails (2016).
