Biography
Alexander Buono, also credited as Alex Buono, is an American cinematographer, director, producer and writer. Born in Portland, Oregon, he studied film production and still photography at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. He began his career on the camera crews of studio films including Twister (1996) and Armageddon (1998), before becoming director of photography for the Saturday Night Live film unit from 1999.
Buono has worked as director of photography on features such as Dead End (2003), Green Street Hooligans (2005) and Shanghai Kiss (2007). He directed episodes of the series Documentary Now! (2015–2022) and Russian Doll (2019). He wrote, produced and shot the documentary feature Bigger Stronger Faster (2008), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2003 he received an Academy Award nomination for the short film Johnny Flynton*, which he produced and photographed.
