Biography
Alla Nazimova was a Russian-born American actress. Born Adelaida Yakovlevna Leventon on 3 June 1879 in Yalta, then part of the Russian Empire, she emigrated to the United States and became a naturalised citizen in 1927. She died in Los Angeles on 13 July 1945.
She made her Broadway debut in 1906 and became a leading stage actress, particularly noted for her performances in plays by Henrik Ibsen. Nazimova entered films in 1916 with War Brides and went on to appear in and produce a number of silent pictures for Metro Pictures. After a period away from the screen she returned in the 1940s with supporting roles in Escape (1940), Blood and Sand (1941) and Since You Went Away (1944), in which she played Zofia Koslowska.
